Mystery of Shawtown

Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 9 at 7 pm and join us for a local history program, “Mystery of Shawtown: Lost History Found in Cellarholes.” Historian, naturalist, and author Carol Foord will lead a virtual tour of Shawtown, an abandoned settlement once located in Freedom, just south of Madison’s Goe Hill Road. Foord will use slides and maps for the tour, moving from site to site, now marked by cellarholes, as the census taker would have done in 1860. The narrative will wrap up with the story of why Shawtown was abandoned.
