Just a passing thought: Does the current popular design element of including photographs of headless torsos (mostly of women) on book covers mean anything? As someone who used to work as a book cover designer, I can almost hear the production meeting at the publisher: “We’d like to stress the alienation (ennui, angst, etc.) of the character without putting a face on her. How about a headless torso?”
