On Thursday, April 25 at 7 pm the Friends of Madison Library will host the presentation “Sugaring Off: Maple Sugaring in New England” by local historian Bob Cottrell. This event will be held in the John F. Chick Room at the Madison Library, and is free and open to the public.

In this slideshow presentation, Bob Cotrell will explore changes over time in how maple sugar was processed, from Native Americans’ and Colonial settlers’ techniques, to 19th and 20th century improvements, up through today’s modern methods. He will also review the social and political implications of maple sugar through its history. The talk will cover the wide variety of maple sugaring tools and equipment in use over the years, along with products harvested from the maple tree.

The evening will begin with a brief annual meeting of the Friends of Madison Library, and refreshments will follow the presentation. The Friends of Madison Library support the Madison Library by raising funds for books, equipment, and special programs like this presentation.
