Looking for an interesting volunteer job? We have several projects in the works or waiting for volunteers. Skill requirements and time commitments vary depending on the task, but if you can picture yourself helping with any of the following, please let us know. Most of these tasks are best suited for adults. Teens are welcome to volunteer for tasks marked with an *. If you’re interested, contact Mary Cronin at the library.

  • Preservation photocopier: Make photocopies of historical records on acid-free paper. You will need to know how to use, load, and reset a copier, or feel you could learn (and remember) how. Short-term commitment.
  • Newspaper archivist: Read, find, make copies and file stories from local newspapers that relate to the town of Madison. Ongoing project, one or two hours every other week. Go-getters may also want to create a digital index for the stories.
  • Inventory assistant: Big project for a highly organized individual or team who likes to work systematically. Familiarity with computer inventory or business systems is helpful. Several months’ commitment, one morning or afternoon per week or every other week.
  • Outreach delivery: Volunteers to deliver library books and other materials to shut-ins and/or day care facilities. Every other week.
  • Summer Reading Program helper*: Help with crafts and games for weekly children’s programs. Eight weeks, starting week of June 28.
  • Summer Reading Program readers’ assistant*: Help children enrolled in summer reading program record their reading and find new things to check out when they stop at the library. Good for someone who can hang out and read between visits. Set your own schedule during library open hours.
  • Story time substitute: Present weekly story time during weeks when staff is unavailable. Occasional Fridays. Note that a background check is required for volunteers working directly with children.
  • Computer geek(lite)*: Share what you know, some computer users need help with basic tasks like opening email attachments, formatting Word documents, printing and saving files, and navigating the internet. Set your own schedule and time commitment.
