The library’s book group is going to discuss George Orwell’s 1984 on Monday, November 27th at 7 pm. Books are available now at the library.
References to ideas from this book are made all the time in contemporary songs, news stories, and other books, and while most of us may be able to trace references to Big Brother, the thought police, and doublespeak back to the book, we may be less familiar with the context.
We’ll talk about the book and its influence on popular culture, and about whether Orwell was making a warning or a prediction about the future. We’ll also look back at the reaction to the book when it was first published in 1949, right after WWII. And as always, there will be snacks.
