Item information: Transcription of town column manuscripts, written by Alice Ward.

Original manuscripts are part of the archive collection at the Madison Library, and span the time period between June 9, 1974 through July 12, 1987. At this time, the Madison Town Column was published in the Carroll County Independent and the North Conway Reporter (needs verification). Alice Ward served as treasurer for the Library Board of Trustees from 1950 to 1970, and we assume she or her family donated the manuscripts to the library sometime in the late 1980s. The handwritten manuscripts, essentially first drafts, were kept for her own records. Columns were copied by hand and mailed weekly to the newspapers for publication. Originals in the Madison Library collection were written on ruled school paper, on the reverse side of school mimeographed papers, on Clayton and Ward stationery, and for the year 197(?), they were written in a weekly calendar journal for 197(?). Due to the brittle nature of the originals, especially the ruled paper, archival photocopies have been made and filed with the originals.
