Song Activity:

Try your hand at the classic children’s movement and song game “Going on a Bear Hunt” where the child repeats each line after you and you both use motions to portray the action of the song. Help it along by keeping a steady rhythm by slapping your thighs for the walking parts of the “hunt.”

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!

Goin’ on a bear hunt!
We’re gonna catch a big one!
I’m not afraid.
Are you?
Not me!

What’s that?
Tall grass!

Can’t go over it.
Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
We’ll have to go through it.
(Sweeping arm motions making swishing sounds)

Goin’ on a bear hunt!
We’re gonna catch a big one!
I’m not afraid.
Are you?
Not me!

What’s that?
It’s a BIG tree!

Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
Can’t go through it.
We’ll have to go over it!
(Arm motion climbing up then climbing back down)

Goin’ on a bear hunt!
We’re gonna catch a big one!
I’m not afraid.
Are you?
Not me!

What’s that?
Oh, it’s mud!

Can’t go over it.
Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
We’ll have to go though it!
(March through the mud making sloshing mud sounds)

Goin’ on a bear hunt!
We’re gonna catch a big one!
I’m not afraid.
Are you?
Not me!

What’s that?
It’s a river!

Can’t go over it.
Can’t go under it.
Can’t go around it.
We’re going to have to swim through it!
(Swim the river)

Goin’ on a bear hunt!
We’re gonna catch a big one!
I’m not afraid.
Are you?
Not me!

What’s that?
Oh, it’s a dark cave!

I can’t see anything.
I can feel something.
I can hear something.
We better take out our flashlights
(Take out flashlight and flick it on)

Oh! It’s a bear!
RUN!

(Repeat the sequence in reverse order quickly and dramatically, slapping thighs and doing all the actions for each verse.)
